Project: Linux/*BSD Desktop install

A project for HPC fundamentals by Robert Lott OR GROUPMEMBER NAMES during the 2012 SEMESTER .

This project was begun on and is anticipated to take X AMOUNT OF TIME. (Upon completion you 1/31/2012 can correct this with the actual length).

Objectives

State the purpose of this project. What is the point of this project? What do we hope to accomplish by undertaking it?

# To build and test a acurrate instruction on how to install and configure a operatting system through a network connection.

Prerequisites

In order to successfully accomplish/perform this project, the listed resources/experiences need to be consulted/achieved:

  • working computer
  • screen
  • keyboard
  • mouse
  • networking card
  • network cable
  • funtioning harddrive

Background

State the idea or purpose of the project. What are you attempting to pursue?

Upon approval, you'll want to fill this section out with more detailed background information. DO NOT JUST PROVIDE A LINK.

Providing any links to original source material, such as from a project page, is a good idea.

You'll want to give a general overview of what is going to be accomplished (for example, if your project is about installing a web server, do a little write-up on web servers. What is it, why do we need one, how does it work, etc.)

# Idea- to provide an example of systems modifacation through networking.

Scope

Give a general overview of your anticipated implementation of the project. Address any areas where you are making upfront assumptions or curtailing potential detail. State the focus you will be taking in implementation.

  1. Debian 5.0 “Lenny” will be installed onto a cleared working harddrive.
  2. Installing should be done from the unix sever on site
  3. 45 min for all

Attributes

State and justify the attributes you'd like to receive upon successful approval and completion of this project.

  • attribute1: why you feel your pursuit of this project will gain you this attribute
  • attribute2: why you feel your pursuit of this project will gain you this attribute
  • etc…

Procedure

The actual steps taken to accomplish the project. Include images, code snippets, command-line excerpts; whatever is useful for intuitively communicating important information for accomplishing the project.

1. Find a computer case with working componites.

2. Find working hard drive

3. Properly Install working hardrive

#1 *important* cheack all cables and wires-ie. power to ALL devices hooked up and connected to mother board.

4. Close case

5. Connect screen, mouse, and keyboard to back of case.

6. Once the initial setup is complete, power on screen and computer.

# If no responce- then review (#1) to resove issue, else cheack the pci slots for additional video cards and other uneeded parts -endif

7. Hit f12 while in the boot screen in order to pull up the boot menu.

8. First select systems setup.

9. Next select drive configuration and make sure that-

  1. hard drive is in secondary master slave slot on the menu
  2. ide drive is enabled
  3. exit drive configuration

10. Next select boot sequence and cheack to make sure intergrated NIC is on top of the array so installation for the sever can be done.

11. Restart the system and wait for the network to connect and prompt a GUI

12. Select 32bit ci386

13. Select Debian/i386 Netboot

14. Install squeez

15. The next 3 options are for nation selection:

  1. ENG
  2. US
  3. ENG

16. Once the Debian Archive mirror option is next hit the home button

  1. select coustum configuration and enter Mirror, then press enter

17. Username- bob

18. User password- bob

19 Root password- bob

# There will be tmes where waiting is part of the process.

20. Partition meathod used was for the whole entire disc

21. select installed harddrive

22. select all files in one

23. finish up and write change to disk

24. when installation is complete. restart and reenter the bios mode.

25. enter boot sequence and move hard drive to top of the array.

26. reboot and enjoy.

Execution

Again, if there is associated code with the project, and you haven't already indicated how to run it, provide a sample run of your code:

lab46:~/src/cprog$ ./hello
Hello, World!
lab46:~/src/cprog$

Reflection

Comments/thoughts generated through performing the project, observations made, analysis rendered, conclusions wrought. What did you learn from doing this project?

#This a very easy way to do multi-installations. #First time doing pixe meathod off a network

In performing this project, the following resources were referenced:

  • URL1
  • URL2
  • URL3 (provides useful information on topic)

Generally, state where you got informative and useful information to help you accomplish this project when you originally worked on it (from Google, other wiki documents on the Lab46 wiki, etc.)
