Linux Desktop Install
I used my laptop computer to do this install. It is an HP DV6 1268nr with a 2.2 GHz AMD Turion ZM-82 Dual Core processor, 4 GB of DDR2 RAM, an ATI Radeon HD 4650 graphics card and a 320 GB hard disk. I will be network installing Ubuntu Karmic (9.10) to half of this hard disk. I have done an install to this particular machine before and I know for a fact that there will be issues with the sound card and with the video card. For the card I will need to download a file from ATI that will install the proprietary drivers to the machine and for the sound I don't exactly remember what I needed to do to fix it.
Steps
- Boot the machine and select to boot from the integrated network card.
- Choose the Linux Distribution to be installed (For me Karmic (9.10) Text Install)
- Choose language (English)
- Choose Locale (United States)
- Choose 'No' to detecting keyboard layout
- Choose 'USA' for both resulting dialogs about the keyboard
- Once the network is configured for DHCP enter a Hostname
- Choose 'Enter manually' for the mirror country
- Type 'mirror' then hit enter twice
- Choose time zone
- Set up the partitions of the hard disk that was to be installed
- After the partition formatting is complete enter the username and password for the user account
- Select the packages to install
- Ubuntu Desktop
- Install the GRUB Boot Loader
- Reboot
Troubleshooting
- Downloaded the Proprietary drivers for the video card on the system from ATI's website
- Change mirror/ubuntu to mirror.rit.edu/ubuntu in /etc/apt/sources.list and run apt-get update and aptitude update
- Add the line 'options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-3 enable_msi=1' to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
- Run this script to upgrade ALSA from version 1.0.20 to 1.0.22
- Reboot
Now when you reboot sound should play from the speakers.
