Project: Troubleshooting A computer

A project for HPC by Derek Girardi during the Fall 2012.

This project was begun on October 23rd and is anticipated to take 1 day.

Objectives

The purpose of this project was to take a computer that was having difficulties and see if i was able to fix this issues and make the computer work again!

Prerequisites

In order to successfully accomplish/perform this project, the listed resources/experiences need to be consulted/achieved:

  • My teacher/Teacher-student help
  • Computer knowledge

Background

The reason i am doing this project is because a friend's of mine computer was not turning on what so ever. So he came to me knowing i knew quite a bit about computers and i thought it was a perfect opportunity to take this a project! The computer did not turn on at all so i didnt have much to work with and it was a hp, which is always a bad time. Just experience with that brand, there is always an issue and it gets really annoying really fast. So in this project i am going to go through the steps to hopefully fix this issue!

Scope

I have the computer in my hands so i am just going to list the steps of what i am doing exactly.

Procedure

Step one: First i did a general run down of the computer. Tried to turn it on, check to se if power was going through or not, take the battery out and put it back in. I did the general process of why it wont turn on.

Step 2: Then i realized no power was going through, so 2 things went through my head, either it is the motherboard or it is the power strip. So this is the time i broke the the volt meter.

Step three: I took the volt meter and tested both ends of the strip. One end was getting 900 volts (the cord was standard at 900) and the other end was getting around 20. So with this in mind i took out my half of power cord and plugged it into the good side of the other cord and it worked perfectly! It turned on right away but then another issue happened, it was not booting.

Step 4: So with that not starting up i thought of 2 things, it is in a infinite loop or the memory modules might be doing something weird with the start up commands.

Step five: So i went and got a screwdriver and proceeded to remove the memory modules. I took them out and tested many different scenarios. See if it worked with only one module, one module in a different slot then where it originally was, switch the 2 modules and yet it wasnt doing anything. The system was booting but it was stuck in a weird loop so i thought i would try to see if it could go into the bios mode.

Step 6: so i started the computer back up and hit the f10 key and then i got a warning message of it having a loop back issue and it went right into its normal boot up process! I checked to see if everything was kosher, restarted about 5 times and booted up fine every single time. Something weird was just stopping it from not booting it up and i kicked it out of its little phase and fied his computer. Now to really fix it he needs to get rid of vista..

Code

No code was needed :p

Reflection

I learned how to troubleshoot a computer issue that is not turning on and i am glad i know how to now! :p
