Linux/BSD Desktop Installation

Installation of Ubuntu i386 Maverick 10.10 on a desktop PC, within the Lair:

System Preparation

  1. Begin with a desktop computer, good harddrive, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and working network connection.
  2. Power on the PC and press <F2> at the prompt to enter the BIOS screen.
  3. On the Setup screen select 'Drive Configurateon' and press enter.
  4. Set 'Primary Master Drive' to Auto and then press escape to return to the Set-Up screen.
  5. Select 'Boot Sequence' and press enter.
  6. Set 1. to 'Hard Disk Drive C:'
  7. Set 2. to 'Integrated NIC' and then press escapr to return to the Set-Up screen.
  8. Select 'Integrated Devices (LegacySelect Options)' and press enter.
  9. Using the left and right arrows to set 'Network Interface Card' to 'ON x/PXE' and set 'Onboard Video Buffer' to '8MB'.
  10. Press escape to return to the Set-Up screen.
  11. Set 'IDE Hard Drive Acoustics Mode' to 'Quiet' using the arrow keys.
  12. Press escape, select 'Save and Exit', and press <Enter>.

Netboot Installation

  1. At the BIOS Splash screen press <F12> for the boot menu.
  2. Select '4. Integrated NIC' and press <Enter>.
  3. When the menu appears, use the arrow keys to highlight and the <Enter> key to select '32-bit (i386)'
  4. Select 'Ubuntu/i386 Netboot' and press <Enter>.
  5. Select 'Install Maverick “10.10” [text]' and press <Enter>.
  6. Select 'English-English' and press <Enter>.
  7. Select 'United Stated' and press <Enter>.
  8. Select '<NO>' when prompted to 'Detect Keyboard Layout' and press <Enter>.
  9. Select 'USA' for the 'Origin of Keyboard' and press <Enter>.
  10. Select 'USA' for the Keyboard Layout and press <Enter>.
  11. When prompted for a hostname you can enter a hostname and press <Enter>(spaces are not allowed) or just press <Enter> to use the default hostname provided.
  12. When prompted to 'Find a mirror' use the arrows to move to the top selection of the list 'enter information manually' and press <Enter>.
  13. Enter the hostname “mirror” and press <Enter>.
  14. Press <Enter> for the default directory.
  15. Press <Enter> to leave the HTTP Proxy Info blank.
  16. When provided with a timezone, check to verify that it matches your current time-zone, select <Yes> and press <Enter>.
Partitioner
  1. Select 'Guided - Use entire disk' and press <Enter>.
  2. Select the harddisk to partition and press <Enter>.
  3. When prompted to 'Write Changes to disk' select <Yes> and press <Enter>.
  4. Set User and Passwords:
  5. Enter the desired username and press <Enter>.
  6. Enter a password for the account and press <Enter>.
  7. Reenter the password for confirmation and press <Enter>.
  8. When prompted about encrypting your home directory select '<No>' and press <Enter>.
Update Management
  • Select 'Install Updates Automatically' and press <Enter>.
Tune the system
  • In order to select options on the given list use the <Space Bar>, verify selection by observing an asterix within the brackets to the left of the package title.
  • Select applicable available packages to install:
  1. Select 'Open SSH' with the arrow keys and press the <Space Bar>.
  2. Select 'Ubuntu Desktop' with the arrow keys and press the <Space Bar>.
  3. Once all desired packages are selected for installation, press the <Enter> key.
Configure GRUB-PC
  • If the Ubuntu flavor is the only OS installed on the computer select <Yes> and press <Enter>.
Set the clock to UTC
  • Select <Yes> and press <Enter>.
  • Select [Continue] and press <Enter> to reboot the system.

Once the system finishes rebooting you will be prompted to enter the username and password provided during the OS installation.

  • Using the mouse, click on 'Username'
  • Enter the Username provided during OS Install and press <Enter>.
  • When prompted enter the password provided during OS install and press <Enter>.

At this point the desktop is ready and useable. If further software packages are desired they can be found in the Ubuntu Software Center.

  • Using the mouse select the 'Applications' tab in the top left-hand corner of the Desktop.
  • Select Ubuntu Software Center.
  • You can now browse or search for the type or specific title of the software you desire to augment the system.
  • Click on the software you're interrested in, at which point you can install the desired software. (Some packages and applications may need to pe purchased before installation will be allowed!)
