Project: CAT 6 Wiring

A project for HPC I by John Kosty during Fall 2014.

Objectives

  • To have whole house coaxial and cat6

Prerequisites

In order to successfully accomplish/perform this project, the listed resources/experiences need to be consulted/achieved:

  1. 110 Punch down Tool
  2. RJ45 Termination Tool
  3. Wire Stripper
  4. Keystone Jacks (12 per type per floor)
  5. Keystone Wall plates
  6. Low Volt 1 Gang Boxes
  7. 1000 FT Cat6 (Blue)
  8. 1000 FT RG6 (Coax)
  9. 1000 FT (Telephone) Cat6 or Cat5E
  10. Patch Panels
  11. 1u Surge Protector
  12. 1u 24 - 32 Port Switch
  13. Many type F Connectors (Coax)
  14. 8 Way coax splitter

Background

  • Wireless is extremely inefficient, and I will be living in a poorly grounded home.
  • Running cat6 to every wall in every room will give me options for my setups
  • Will be running coax and telephone with the cat6

Procedure

  • This is an unfinished project due to the nature of it.
  • This project is done as a log instead of a step by step
  • Project is assisted by 81 year old grandfather

April 29th, 2014

  • Today grandpa bought a roll of RG6
  • we ran from the old TWC termination to the Cabinet.

  • The plan is to have one branch from the coax splitter run to modem, and the other will go to 8 way splitter

May 2nd, 2014

  • The items I ordered from monoprice came today
  • I was suprised at the quality of what I had Bought
  • I had figured that 1 dollar versions of things would suck, but they did not
  • I did my first punchdowns today, and they turned out great

  • The three keystones fit in the plate, but I had problems with the rj12 one
  • Order is RJ12 on the top, then RJ45, then coax
  • RJ12 is just too fat of a keystone
  • I have no idea why it is that way. It takes less wires than an RJ45
Panel
  • The panel was much sturdier than I had imaged it would be
  • Grandpa is going to make the mounting system for me.
  • My goal is for it to look something like this

May 3rd, 2014

  • Last night dad bought my second patch panel.
  • This panel will run into the basement for the most part

May 12th, 2014

  • Big update
  • Almost everything inside the cabinet itself is done
Cable Splitter
  • The cable from the outside has had its wires ran to the 8 way splitter, and to the modem location

  • Stress relief bends

  • The 8 way splitter in position and mounted.

  • 8 way splitter all wired up

Panel two
  • Panel 2 has been installed and it has had the 8 way coax splitter wired into it

Outlet
  • Grandpa installed a 2 socket power outlet above the center of the cabinet

  • Having two sockets will allow me to have two 1u surge protectors. One for each side.
Router Shelf
  • Grandpa separated the right and left bottom shelf from being accessible, so I had him add a box for me to run 2x cat6 and 1x rg6 to it

Reflection

It was quite interesting running wires. Unfortunately I lost the majority of the step by steps. I will continue to add more to this as time goes on. The project will be done some time during 2015.

Things left to do
  • Coax to every room
  • 2x cat6 to every room, 1 ethernet, 1 telephone
