Project: Workstation Ergonomics

A project for HPC II by John Kosty during Spring 2015.

Objectives

  • To create a comfortable workspace within the living room, specifically from the couch

Prerequisites

In order to successfully accomplish/perform this project, the listed resources/experiences need to be consulted/achieved:

Background

  • Computers are not used at a desk
  • Keyboard and mouse is on coffee table
  • Monitors are on end tables
  • The reason to do this is to reduce strain for users

Procedure

  • I began by measuring the distance from my couch to my coffee table.
  • I find that the distance is the exact distance that a Monoprice monitor arm is.

  • I buy two of these arms, one for both users
  • I realize right away that these arms have trouble being rotated flat because of how they work when mounted to a monitor, but I decide to worry about that later
  • The next step was to decide how I wanted to support my keyboard and mouse.
  • I decided a wood plank made of poplar wood would do the job, along with an ebony stain
  • While waiting for the stain to soak in, I begin my search for a way to mount my monitors.
  • I end up at monoprice again, and I decide to buy two 3 way arms

  • Once the monitor arms were in, it was time to assemble
  • The keyboard stands needed extra wood wedges to stay stable ( lost image of them being made )
  • Here is everything finished

Reflection

While I am sure there are better ways to do what I have done, I am extremely happy with the outcome. The project has resulted in much less back pain while doing work, and I am able to provide a comfortable work environment for my pregnant girlfriend. The only unfortunate thing is that the left user will have to use either their knee for support or go left handed to comfortably use the mouse.
