Jeremey's spring2020 Journal

First Day

First Day

I am Jeremey, Im an ASY student so I am at corning full time but wont receive my high school diploma till the end of the year. As evident by my participation in the program I was quite eager and not very patient to start college but in the end starting this fall. I love a lot of the arts including music and drawing but also have a fascination with technology and quantum physics and astrology, I plan to use my diploma for computer science to either go into coding or use it for a more scientific job. I was in CSCS 1200 and 1240 last semester and really enjoyed learning the basics of and applying coding skills. Towards future skills I want to first off become decent at using a computer without relying on the fancy OS systems doing everything for me. From there learning more about creating my own executable code to speed up tasks and such and create my own versions of programs I use more personalized for me. I plan on switching to RIT my third year to continue my learning in the subject as I know they have a great computing program.

This week I finished up the pct rather quickly, especially in comparison to not being avle to solve some previous ones. I think it was just luck with it having rules present that im very good at, specifically systems of equations and a lot of one apart rules. The project I might turn in a day late more as i've had very little time to work on it. It did help me learn in the linux environment, I have to use for coding things(chromebook issues bypassed with a boot loader), much more about getting and installing packages. After talking with Caleb I know much more about in my linux environment using apt and debian packages. The college will have to close sometime before march 19th according to Governor Coumo so im quite worried about my credit load all switching online as I such as online learning and took steps to make sure my classes were in person not online. I need to get some extra credit work done for your class and my calc class and if my english professor ever gives us any. In Joe's class I finally got my hex editor to work, I was having a logical error most likely due to writing the base code for it at 2am with little sleep. In that regard just need to add file readability and editing. I believe I can do that by changing the index to start at the beginning of the file and be as long as the file IF the read file command is given. As far as editing goes I can add that by allowing the address the user puts in be recognized as the right index and then put the user“s data in the index location.

This week I pretty quickly finished up the project pbx2 after looking into the -P option for unzip. Made use of my first local variables in a project script for said passwords. On Wednesday I finished up the steps file, submitted them, and pushed to repository. I wasn't able to solve the previous bonus and regular pct puzzles in time and now am stuck in the same issue with pct6. I've tried everything I can think of besides directly asking for how to do it which I shouldn't be doing only clues/hints/strategies. I'll keep trying at it, to me they are much harder than calc especially when my brain is hardwired to solving for 1 or 2 or 3 variables at most at a time not ten so the lack of numbers messes me up I suppose. Having trouble keeping up and discerning the C from linux classes and languages but I believe I have a working hex reader he asked for just need to allow fir editing then for file reading instead of memory reading. I'm preparing for the next project as well which I think I need more explaining hopefully next class will solve that. Hoping soon there will be more bonus projects, as well as I'll try to finish more projects early, to get more bonus points to help compensate against the pct projects. With drama and band and chorus and 19 credits finding trouble keeping up and everything especially with an English teacher creating very heavy workloads every day. Been keeping up with these journals well though.

Got all but minimum word count for last week, plan to take this week to get ahead. I plan to do the bonus puzzle and get everything else done early for bonus. Today we had our permission taken from nano which I do like quite more however I'll just get used to VI. Now that im getting more used to the patterns of the code Im understanding and keeping up much better. I did the bonus puzzle box which was not to difficult at all, then started urev, I was good until I got to the octal values. After some explaining from caleb I finish that up with some bonus points though not as many as I would have liked. Been stuck on the same long division puzzle all break and still can't solve it, definitely need a second mind take a look as I might be overlooking things from looking at it so long. Caleb started me last semester on using linux as a bypass to the limatations of my chromebook and between gcc and with needing to use the command line often in the mode to begin with it is quite helpful to have the knowlege from class to help me. I do think we should go over things like getting packages and installing them using the command line and maybe setting up shortcuts though thats not as important. In addition I think a collaborative project with groups or the whole class could be very fun as in the previous classes we havnt done tha to much and I know its common in coding jobs.

This week I struggled a lot on the now late adm0 project and still need some more help. I spent quite a bit of time using man to look up commands to do it but definitely need more help. Running on 4 hours of sleep with 19 credits is interesting. I plan to get started on the next project. Got the adm0 project done and used it along with feedback to do pbx0, this time my steps file is completely executable and does the project itself with small comments. I feel much better with the commands we have used so far and think I could use them. However, I feel I dont know as many uses of each that I should know yet.(went crazy in pbx0 reading the tr man page over 10 times)
