Premise

Occasionally, local job opportunities pop up in which CCC computer students find themselves eligible.

The persistent problem is that students often do not have their act together in the form of a resume and portfolio. So any interested students quickly scramble to throw something together.

This is simultaneously an attempt to better acclimate yourself to the wiki, and also prepare for a possible job opportunity down the road.

The intent is that, after you are done with this particular project, you will have a viable wiki-based resume that you can continue to update as you proceed with your studies.

Procedure

The aim of this project is simple and direct- to craft a viable wiki-based resume (not a word processor document, not a PDF, not a straight HTML file, a resume styled out of wiki syntax).

This will require both content (your information and experiences) and styling (wiki + wiki plugin syntax).

You are to make an authentic and accurate resume, so that you have a readymade resource that can be quickly deployed in the event of a job opportunity.

Focus

If you have an existing resume that you'd merely like to convert to wiki format, that is absolutely fine.

Obviously if you have no up-to-date resume, you'll also need to ascertain the appropriate content to place on it.

If you'd like, you may make an optimized resume for a particular dream job. Or you may simply make a generic one.

If it helps, you could pretend you are applying to a paid summer IT intern position at a local hospital, assisting with equipment upgrades, software installation, and possibly some help desk support duties. Contemplate the sorts of skills you could present on your resume that would make you an attractive candidate and separate your resume from the rest of the applicants.

Note that because this will be public, you do not have to put any contact information. You may want to consider putting in an e-mail address, however, just in case a prospective employer does encounter your resume.

Location

Your resume should be located at the following URL:

http://lab46.corning-cc.edu/user/USERNAME/resume

Be sure to substitute “USERNAME” with your actual lab46 username. If you are logged into the wiki, you should be able to go to that page and edit it.

Submission

To successfully complete this project, the following criteria must be met:

  • Resume must be in the form of a dokuwiki page
  • It must be located at the specified address
  • Content should be approximately 1 page in length (guestimated, since we're on a wiki page)
  • Content should be an honest and true reflection of your skills, education, and abilities
  • Resume should be organized and well-presented (i.e. look nice)
  • To signal completion, submit the URL of your resume to me using the submit tool.

To submit this project to me using the submit tool, run the following command at your lab46 prompt:

$ submit unix resume http://lab46.corning-cc.edu/user/USERNAME/resume
Submitting unix project "resume":
    -> http://lab46.corning-cc.edu/user/USERNAME/resume(OK)

SUCCESSFULLY SUBMITTED

You should get some sort of confirmation indicating successful submission if all went according to plan. If not, check for typos and or locational mismatches.
