======Linux/BSD Desktop Installation====== ---Brian Ewanyk =====Objectives===== The Installation of Ubuntu i386 Maverick 10.10 on a desktop PC, with a wine application for execution of windows programs. =====Materials & Preparation===== - Begin with a desktop computer capable of netbooting, installed memory, and installed harddrive. - Attach a working monitor, keyboard, and mouse. - A working network connection to the Lair LAN is also required. =====Background===== Ubuntu - Maverick 10.10 is a graphical user interface flavor of a unix operating system. This project will instruct you in the installation, set-up and configuration of the PC for general usage. It will also walk you through the installation of a 'wine' application so that windows applications can be run on the ubuntu system later. =====Procedure===== ====PC BIOS Set-Up==== - Power on the PC and press at the prompt to enter the BIOS screen. - On the Setup screen select 'Drive Configurateon' and press enter. - Set 'Primary Master Drive' to Auto and then press escape to return to the Set-Up screen. - Select 'Boot Sequence' and press enter. - Set 1. to 'Hard Disk Drive C:' - Set 2. to 'Integrated NIC' and then press escapr to return to the Set-Up screen. - Select 'Integrated Devices (LegacySelect Options)' and press enter. - Using the left and right arrows to set 'Network Interface Card' to 'ON x/PXE' and set 'Onboard Video Buffer' to '8MB'. - Press escape to return to the Set-Up screen. - Set 'IDE Hard Drive Acoustics Mode' to 'Quiet' using the arrow keys. - Press escape, select 'Save and Exit', and press . ====Netboot Installation==== - At the BIOS Splash screen press for the boot menu. - Select '4. Integrated NIC' and press . - When the menu appears, use the arrow keys to highlight and the key to select '32-bit (i386)' - Select 'Ubuntu/i386 Netboot' and press . - Select 'Install Maverick "10.10" [text]' and press . - Select 'English-English' and press . - Select 'United Stated' and press . - Select '' when prompted to 'Detect Keyboard Layout' and press . - Select 'USA' for the 'Origin of Keyboard' and press . - Select 'USA' for the Keyboard Layout and press . - When prompted for a hostname you can enter a hostname and press (spaces are not allowed) or just press to use the default hostname provided. - When prompted to 'Find a mirror' use the arrows to move to the top selection of the list 'enter information manually' and press . - Enter the hostname "mirror" and press . - Press for the default directory. - Press to leave the HTTP Proxy Info blank. - When provided with a timezone, check to verify that it matches your current time-zone, select and press . ===Partitioner=== - Select 'Guided - Use entire disk' and press . - Select the harddisk to partition and press . - When prompted to 'Write Changes to disk' select and press . - Set User and Passwords: - Enter the desired username and press . - Enter a password for the account and press . - Reenter the password for confirmation and press . - When prompted about encrypting your home directory select '' and press . ===Update Management=== * Select 'Install Updates Automatically' and press . ===Tune the system=== * In order to select options on the given list use the , verify selection by observing an asterix within the brackets to the left of the package title. * Select applicable available packages to install: - Select 'Open SSH' with the arrow keys and press the . - Select 'Ubuntu Desktop' with the arrow keys and press the . - Once all desired packages are selected for installation, press the key. ==Configure GRUB-PC== * If the Ubuntu flavor is the only OS installed on the computer select and press . ==Set the clock to UTC== * Select and press . * Select [Continue] and press to reboot the system. ====Account Set-Up==== Once the system finishes rebooting you will be prompted to enter the username and password provided during the OS installation. * Using the mouse, click on 'Username' * Enter the Username provided during OS Install and press . * When prompted enter the password provided during OS install and press . ====Additional Application Installation==== At this point the desktop is ready and useable. If further software packages are desired they can be found in the Ubuntu Software Center. * Using the mouse select the 'Applications' tab in the top left-hand corner of the Desktop. * Select Ubuntu Software Center. * You can now browse or search for the type or specific title of the software you desire to augment the system. * Click on the software you're interrested in, at which point you can install the desired software.
